Underwater Smartphone Protective Coating

Underwater smartphones via spray on coating:

Zagg the device protection specialists have developed a unique spray on coating for smartphones that they claim allows owners to submerge their devices fully in water, take calls, and still work when back on terra firma, we assume the camera function will work too while under the water.

As you can see the HzO technology (as it is called) definitely seems to work but I notice that the headphone jack has been used and wonder how it works without that void being filled…do not worry, all will be revealed.

At a demonstration in Las Vegas at the CES tech conference, the company showed off making calls with a Samsung Galaxy S phone while it was underwater, so how does the technology work?

With so many users dropping their phone in the toilet at some point, could this amazing coating technology save the industry a hell of a lot of cash in claims?

Well currently Apple pretty much know if you have dunked your phone in water as they have technology inside which can report these kind of issues, so insurance claims on water damaged handsets have to be erm…watertight in order to get past Apple.

But we all know that many people must be making false claims globally and water damage has got to be one of the most common excuses, so surely it makes sense to coat your smartphone in the manufacturing stage to help cut claims down later on in a phones life?

How does it work?

A company spokesperson said:

“HzO uses a unique coating processes to shield almost anything from water and corrosion damage, unlike other water damage solutions, with HzO technology a device is not sealed, water is able to enter. Instead, the electronic components inside the device are coated to provide protection, leaving the device unencumbered and always guarded against unexpected accidents.”

Quite simply a fine film of the wafer-thin coating gets applied to the exterior of the device and then seeps into all crevices producing a water tight seal, the coating goes into ports like the headphone port also which effectively should create a fully sealed unit to water penetration.

This allows the device to work as normal so touch screens are not affected and the phone can carry on as usual.

Apple are going to be offering pre-treated phones next year after incorporating HzO coating technology into their own product line, I wonder if tablets will get the same treatment, this now has me thinking about how many drop these larger devices down the toilet too!….loud plop!
